Description: | This article uses Kleist's empirical observation that an arch only remains standing because all of the stones constructing want to collapse at the same time. This paper explores ideas of collapse as history, architecture, material and concept. After reading Kant's 'Critiques', Kleist made a traumatic transition to critical thinking. It closely analyses Kleist's story 'Earthquake in Chile'. The second terrain studies the disrupted landscape of Portland in Dorset as a site demonstrating Kleist's notions of immanent and actual collapse. This is a triple refereed journal article, based on part of PhD research. |
