Lewis, Mark (2005) Mark Lewis. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Lewis, Mark
Description:

This was a major exhibition of my work where I was able to place a number of recent film installations and photographic works in the context of a longer-term development. This provided me with an opportunity, specifically to link recent installations previously shown separately including: 'Gladwells Picture Window' (2005); 'Off Leash High Park'(2004); 'Algonquin Park Early March'; 'Children's Games' (2002); 'Wind Farm' (2001) and 'Lawson Estate' (2003).

Each of these films has explored different ways of presenting the moving image in relationship to classic pictorial genres and has attempted to reveal the inventions (and reinventions) that film can bring to this traditional way of thinking about picture making. The curator and I chose works that revealed and developed continuity and progression so that when shown together the films could be understood as being part of a larger project.

In preparing the show we the progression of my work and drew out for the first time a number of underlying themes. This aspect of my research and collaboration was embodied in the exhibition, its layout and juxtaposition.

Research Interests

Uses film as gallery installation medium to reflect and form critique of dominant cultural forms as they are reflected in cinema. Exhibited internationally in galleries and film festivals
Current Research

The work, mainly using film as a gallery installation medium, reflects and forms a critique of dominant cultural forms as they are represented in cinema. The installations, like 'Peeping Tom' and 'Upside Down Touch of Evil' make direct reference to existing works in the cannon and 'The Pitch' reflects on the way the process of cinema production marginalises fundamental aspects of the culture by examining particularly the 'role' of the film extra. The work has received wide exhibition in galleries and film festivals, received critical review and won awards.
