Description: | The project was funded by Arts Council England and Warwick District Council. It consisted of a collaborative performance with the dancer Junior Cunningham of the Motionhouse Dance theatre. The performance was part of Medicate, the Medical Science and Art Programme, a joint venture between the Museum and Warwick University. The piece was inspired by frightening childhood memories of crossing a bridge made from ropes and wooden planks in my home country of Guyana in South America. The installation piece exaggerated the emotions one might experience on different points of a journey. The mysterious depths of the sea were evoked through sound, the movement of fabric and Junior Cunningham’s physical relationship with his environment. The gallery installation, which included four garments worn by the dancer, mimicked the bottom of the sea and was created through the use of translucent satin fabrics, coloured lights and sound. Inspiration for the project was drawn from artist Caroline Broadhead, whose work addresses the body through a varies of formats including, dance installation, garments and objects. The project was promoted through a series of banners sponsored by the Arts Council to advocate projects that they have supported. The project was evaluated internally by the Arts Council peer review scheme and was witnessed by a member of their funding body. Selection for the project was through an extensive application process supported by two partners, Motionhouse Dance Company and the Royal Pumproom Art Gallery and Museum. After the performance a question and answer sessions was held for members of the general public, and a specialist dance workshop was delivered. |
