Description: | The culmination of a three year period of research, this exhibition focussed on a collection of late Gothic painted Limewood sculptures, which are housed at the Stigel-Museum in Memmingen, Germany. The research involved building multi-lensed, cardboard cameras, designed and built specifically to photograph specific sculptures. The exhibition, at the MEWO Kunsthalle, Memmingen, included four late Gothic sculptures, transported from the Strigel Museum for the exhibition, their corresponding cameras and the hands-on, colour c-type photographs made using the cameras. The experimental project explored photography’s ability to scrutinise, the performative act of making the images and the material nature of the photographic process and apparatus. In addition to the sculptures, gianbt, multi-lensed cameras and photographs the exhibition also featured a three screen video installation. The project has its roots in early, experimental photographic practices, but uses an engagement with the way images are made to explore the nature of the encounter with works of art and conditions that inform how we experience objects and images now. |
