Santa Kate de Gavorrano

Cusumano, Andrea (2005) Santa Kate de Gavorrano. [Art/Design Item]

Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Cusumano, Andrea
Description:

'Santa Kate da Gavorrano' (Saint Catherine of Gavorrano) was a sculptural installation I presented in the exhibition ‘Falda per Falda’ (Cut for Cut) curated by Christoph Bertsch, Director of Fine Art History at the University of Innsbruck, and Leonardo Cambri of the Instituto Statale d’Arte di Urbino. The installation remains as part of a permanent collection in the ‘Mineral Park of Gavorrano’ (Tuscany).

In this site-specific work, using a ‘found statue’ of a female saint I was experimenting with the dramaturgical potential of the space and the psychological impact of the religious object. Though sculptural, and presented in the context of an artwork, the piece is intentionally a theatrical ‘intervention’. The work extends the borders of the scenographic practice through a particular kind of site-specific installation, using a methodology of work that creates meanings out of the space and theatrical objects.

The work in the ‘Mineral Park’ is placed in a pyrite mine abandoned about 50 years before. I treated the tunnel entrance to the mine as a proscenium arch to become a ‘Chapel of the Holy Kate from Gavorrano’, an invented saint, who has since been treated locally as ‘real’. I particularly focused on the way the disused mine could become a palimpsest of stories and images re-invented and transformed while preserving the traces and abandoned relics.

My artistic interest and research in this work was largely the exploration of ‘crossing of contexts’ bringing together my experience as a maker of theatre and of art works.
