Description: | Installation of 'Negative Publicity: Artefacts of Extraordinary Rendition' as part of Group Exhibition: Scratch on the Eyelid. The collaborative research-led body of work by Edmund Clark and Crofton Black about the process of extraordinary rendition and the CIA secret prison programme, titled 'Negative Publicity: Artefacts of Extraordinary Rendition', is shown as part of 'Scratch on the Eyelid'. Clark and Black's work is a paper trail showing the rendition process via the weak points of business accountability: invoices, documents of incorporation, and billing reconciliations produced by the small-town American businesses enlisted in prisoner transportation. In conjunction with photographs of former detention sites, detainees’ homes, companies and government locations this work recreates the network that links CIA ‘black sites,’ and evokes ideas of opacity, surface, and testimony in relation to this process: a system hidden in plain sight. This 3 weeks lasting Festival is a multi disciplinary project, always taking place in November, since 1992, in many cities of the Silesian Voivodship. Its main idea is to contribute directly to a closer integration and promotion of culture of various nations. With a solid 20 years of experience, the Festival is a stimulating universe of encounters, exhibitions, presentations, readings and screenings of artists from all over the world. During every edition, over 30 artistic events intend to show the wide spectrum of art vision, arousing curiosity of audiences eager to come into contact with new tendencies and intriguing proposals. During previous editions of the Festival, we had the great pleasure to present Polish musicians and singers, as well as outstanding musical performances by legendary artists from all around the world, such as John Zorn (USA), John Cale (USA), Kronos Quartet (USA), Arto Lindsay Band (USA), Madredeus (Portugal), Paco Ibaňez (Spain), Salif Keita (Mali), I Am Kloot (UK), Bill Frisell (USA), Yo La Tengo (USA), The National (USA), Andrew Bird (USA), Marcury Rev (USA), Low (USA), Matt Elliott (UK), Lambchop (USA), Calexico (USA), Efterklang (Denmark), Tortoise (USA), Fleet Foxes (USA), Bill Callahan (USA), John Grant (USA), Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks (USA),M-83 (France), Laurie Anderson (USA), Tindersticks (UK), Tinariwen (Mali), Mark Lanegan (USA), Tinariwen (Mali) and many, many more... Concerning Fine Arts, we've been organizing many exhibitions of artists such as Hans Bellmer (Germany), Joseph Beuys (Germany), Jiri Kolar (Czech Republic), Jiri Anderle (Czech Republic), Tadeusz Kantor (Poland), Pierre Alechinsky (Belgium), Roland Topor (France), Chapman Brothers (England), Roger Ballen (South Africa), David Lynch (USA), Pablo Picasso (Spain), Sławomir Elsner (Poland/Germany), Carole Benzaken (France) and many other. The literary and poetic evenings allowed us to receive well known poets and writers, who came to Silesia to share their work during unusual readings: Tomaz Salamun (Slovenia), Brian Patten (UK), Craig Raine (UK), Jurij Andruchovicz (Ukraine), Stanislaw Baranczak (Poland), Frédéric Pajak (France), Zhu Hao (China), Wang Ying (China), Ron Padgett (USA), Mary Jo Bang (USA), Elizabeth Willis (USA) etc. On 4 November at 6 PM at BWA Contemporary Art Gallery a vernissage of an exhibition Scuff Mark on an Eyelid, referring to the problem of migration and terrorism in modern Europe, will take place. Artists participating in the exhibition include Jean-Michel Alberola, Edmund Clark, Jean-Christophe Menu, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Zbigniew Libera, among others. |
