Description: | Wiebke Leister: Echoes and Callings Opening: Sun 24 June 2018, 1.00-4.00pm Performance night: Thu 5 July, 7.00-9.00pm: "Bearing Hannya' In this exhibition, we will be meeting Hannya. And Namanari. And possibly Hashi-Hime or Masukami. Female demons that emerge from Japanese Noh drama and storytelling. She will be met in different settings, figurations and materialities, but we will encounter her through her transformative states as a woman who has become an angry spirit – through pain or betrayal. Her images themselves now returning ghosts, apparitions and echoes, seeking both revenge and release. Re-embodied, contradictory and intertextual, we will be following her imaginary genealogy in word and image. Mouth half-open, part shouting, part screaming; possibly also afraid while setting out to frighten. Conjuring up her liminal existence as she reveals herself as an image that is being upheld. In this way, she has existed throughout times and cultures. But today, more than ever, recognized as released and untamed, and finally, speaking out, loud. List of works: |
