Description: | Video in 3 parts for site specific mobile app in The National Gallery Singapore. Commisioned as part of 'the unrealised commission' apa jika / what if: The work uses the figure of a forgotten artist to reconsider the way in which Modernisms’ Others is necessarily an on-going project, and any attempt to formalise its boundaries or stabilise its terms falls into the traps of representation. The work takes the form of a filmic journey weaving in and out of specific locations in the Singapore Galleries, in and out of time zones/periods, in and out of fiction/fact, and the works of some of the female artists on display in the galleries. The story of the forgotten weaver becomes symbolic collateral in the push towards modernity and defining the modern within ‘Singapore’ art history. |
