Anthony McCall (interview)

This article is an interview with artist Anthony McCall, at the invitation in April 2006 of the journal BOMB, based in New York.

The interview was developed from the public talk between ourselves and Anthony McCall held at Tate Britain, London (10/09/2005)on the occasion of the showing of Anthony McCall's solid light film installation 'Long Film for Four Projectors' (1974) at Tate Britain. The printed conversation also focuses on the work shown in Anthony McCall's exhibitions 'Doubling Back' and 'You and I'.

The interview explores the boundary between sculpture and cinema in McCall's early solid light films, the visceral and participatory experience of his projections and the structural logic of his recent work, which draws on the cinematic conventions of the wipe and parallel action.

It is the last in a series of conversations (begun at Tate Britain), which, with funding from the Henry Moore Foundation, will be published as a book. It will be distinguished from the few contemporary accounts of McCall’s practice by capitalising on the nature of the conversation - generative and extemporised - and in particular, of a conversation between artists.

The book represents a ‘collaborative’ approach to writing through extended discussion over a period of time, in both galleries and studios, and through a number of exhibitions, to develop an evolved analysis of the conceptual and theoretical dimensions of the making, and the physical experience of encounter with the work – work which for many represents a riposte to prevailing strategies within the presentation of the moving image in the gallery context and a call for reassessment.
