Head Corridor

'Head Corridor', a video installation in full and equal collaboration with Stephen Johnstone, was commissioned by Wolfgang Fetz for the exhibition 'Gymnasion' at Bregenzer Kunstverein, Bregenze, Austria. [Curated by Peter Lewis and Wolfgang Fetz. (catalogue)]

'Head Corridor' is formed by a series of inverted u-section conduits. These units are arranged in relation to the exhibition space. Animated bands of colour are projected into the units to trace and describe the interior contours of the space. The piece was made in the studio and is a form of process video. Although general effects were anticipated, the video was created entirely in relation to the form of the units and the size of the units matched to the proportions of the projected image.

'Head Corridor' was linked to a second piece of camera less projected video work that emerged from the extended period of studio experimentation we were engaged in at this time, Prisma (2001-2002) made possible by a Leverhulme Trust Research Grant (July 2000 – Feb. 2001). 'Prisma' was shown at The Harris Museum, Preston as part of ‘The Digital Aesthetic’ exhibition (other exhibitors across Preston included Jane Prophet, Steina and Woody Vasulka). A conference paper outlining the process based production of 'Head Corridor' and 'Prisma' titled ‘The Virtual camera and Projected Space’ was presented at ‘The Digital Aesthetic’ Conference, University of Central Lancaster, Preston, Nov. 2001. 'Head Corridor' has also been presented at invited talks such as ‘Architecture and Projection’ Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastrict, The Netherlands, Sept. 2005, and the public lecture series at The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (as part of the International artists’ residency programme, Sept 2002).
