Recent Work

As an artist my research involves investigating the nature of visual perception, arriving at novel ways of presenting the knowledge gained from the act of looking and comprehending the world as seen and interpreted in the work that I make.

Galerie Konstruktiv Tendens has a longstanding reputation for its focus on new developments in the field of precise abstract exploration and work examining visual perception. In this exhibition I presented a series of works made between 2001-2004. The series built on my earlier research into the ordering of elements within and beyond the picture plane, and relationships between symmetrical and asymmetrical form, and illusion and reality in abstract pictorial representation of space.

The pieces exhibited represented an extending investigation of the boundaries between illusion and reality and refined my understanding of distinctions between the way monochromatic and polychromatic forms challenge perception of space, depth and volume. This work continued to build upon the exploration of these issues established in the work made for the 'Nathan Cohen – Form and Vision' exhibition of 2001, and advances more complex structuring and division within the picture plane to test spatial comprehension. The painted constructions examined different approaches to creating structures which can simultaneously appear both two and three-dimensional challenging the viewer’s perception of where real and illusionary space exists within the picture plane.

Though my research includes theoretical study related to perception, my process involves a slow and careful interplay between the construction of an image and examination of its subjective perceptual effect. It is a research process conducted in the traditions of abstract art practiced within the studio.
