Retrospective 1984-2004

This retrospective held in the Mondriaanhuis Museum voor Constructieve en Concrete Kunst offered me a unique opportunity to review new and previously un-exhibited works in the context of a twenty-year development. In addition, its location in a Museum devoted to a focus on the particular tradition of abstract constructivist art allowed me to re-examine my work in the context of its historical tradition.

The exhibition, sponsored by Heilijgers and Rabobank, included a number of new works like ‘Nanzen-ji’ and ’Triadic Form’, made following the Stockholm show held earlier in the year, that developed a new complexity in the way apparently rectilinear forms could be constructed in two-dimensions and perceptually understood. These new works were developed out of a continuous exploration and precise examination of the relationship between special representation and the construction of an ‘apparently real’ three dimensionality.

Current research

My professional activity as an artist currently spans 25 years and during this time I have been preoccupied with how it may be possible to invent pictorially in ways that challenge spatial perception. I am interested in the interface between the two and three-dimensional and the relationship between artwork, architectural space and viewer. Recent research has also focused on the art-science relationship and has resulted in collaborative projects with scientists in Japan, including RPT (Tachi Lab) and Saccade Based Display (NTT).

Recent research in collaboration with Tachi lab Tokyo has resulted in the development of retro-reflective projection technologies within a fine art context. Resulting artwork has been presented at Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria resulting in an interactive display utilizing motion sensing and video projected onto retro-reflective surfaces incorporated into a wall based 2-dimensional construction designed to give the impression of a three dimensional multi-layered space. Current research also includes exploration of potential for creating artwork utilizing new software allowing for multi-channel real-time video editing.

Recent work also continues to explore the possibilities for creating images that challenge spatial perception in architectural environments, with resulting wall and room installations exhibited in Havana, Cuba and Tokyo, Japan.
