Magnetic Man

Anderson, Peter (2001) Magnetic Man. [Art/Design Item]

Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Anderson, Peter
Description:

This large-scale interactive artwork draws upon Cayenne's philosophy and Anderson's own links to the culture and landscape of Belfast. 'Magnetic Man' is a sound responsive 40ft long digitally operated light ceiling sculpture, where light responds to the levels of sound from the people in its restaurant. The pulsating effect is created by a combination of poetry and computer programming language, when if keyed into a computer will cause the information on the screen to gently and indefinitely rotate. This piece was inspired by early Irish folklore in which the fairies used food to tempt, enchant and entrap local people in the same way that today's world finds technology a strange and powerful enticement.

The process of making a fluorescence light-box sound responsive involved collaborating with architects, sign manufacturers, lighting and sound engineers and asking them to work together in a new ways which required them to cross boundaries of their practice and finally to create a new unique product. As a result of this process a new product was invented and later introduced to the market place by the lighting company Tridonic (one of the collaborators). It is available for off the shelf purchase today.
