Description: | ‘Ebb & Flow’ is a touring exhibition of artists working in a wide range of practices and media from video, installation to 3D construction sculpture and painting. It is curated by Claude Temin-Vergez, Jimmy Conway-Dyer and Alistair Payne. The show consists of 8 artists and one writer in total. They are: Phyllida Barlow (UK), Diana Cooper (US), Jimmy Conway-Dyer (UK), Fransje Killaars (NL), Alistair Payne (UK), Edgar Schmitz-Evans (D), David Ryan (UK), Michael Stubbs (UK) and Claude Temin-Vergez (FR). It is a 2-phased project: Phase 1 completed in London in 2005 at 3 Colt Lane Gallery– Phase 2 touring to Raid Project Gallery in LA in 2006. Starting from the commonality of the works, having practices rooted in very different background (sculpture, Film and installation & painting). The common principles reside in an investigation and questioning of the constructs of painting close to the ethos of the French ‘Support-Surface’ movement. The show focuses equally on work, which examines ideas of fluidity (non-linear process) within artistic practice, as suggested by the French philosopher Giles Deleuze. The result is a dynamic dialogue between varied practises using installation, sewing, assemblage collages processes, machines and paint. The aim is to create a visual and critical interaction between the works. An essay by art critic David Ryan accompanying the show was published for phase 1 in a brochure for the exhibition in London. As curator and participating artist in the exhibition, I was involved in all aspects of phase 1 and phase two. Funded by British Council England, Wolverhampton University, University of the Arts- London. |
