East International 2007

'East International 2007' was a group exhibition, including the work of 27 contemporary artists. The selections for 2007 were made by Matthew Higgs, director of White Columns Gallery, New York and Marc Camille Chaimowicz, artist and Reader in Fine Art, University of Reading, from over one thousand worldwide applicants.

Work by Jeffrey Dennis was selected for this exhibition. His work was shown alongside the work of international artists working in a wide range of media. As his paintings include a range of urban imagery gathered from photography and film, the show was an opportunity to demonstrate how painting may be located alongside, and organically absorb influence from film and digital media as an index and critique of contemporary urban life, dislocation and community.

Dennis was able to show a range of recent work including three paintings and ten drawings previously unexhibited. In particular the drawings demonstrated a previously undiscussed aspect of his practice. The drawings are produced habitually in the studio, with little regard to any public audience, as a kind of abstract diary which underpins the structure and rhythms of the more 'public' paintings. To exhibit these previously 'private' works was to demonstrate kinship with other works made in constrained or secretive circumstances.
