Description: | 'Transpersonal, instructions' is a commission at Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center curated by Dr Stephen Wilson in conjunction with the University of the Philippines Visiting Professor Program. Participants include: Oreet Ashery, Revital Cohen & Tuur Van Balen, Merlinda Bobis, Eisa Jocson, The Filipino Superwoman Band, The Karrabing Film Collective, Dana Klisanin, Leslie Kulesh, Andy Lacey, Russ Ligtas, Raquel de Loyola, Mark Salvatus and Evelyn Toacheng Wang. Transpersonal proposes to work within the cultural context of Manila as part of a transregional conversation. The term transpersonal relays states of consciousness beyond the limits of personal and artistic identity. These may include peak and spiritual experiences including near-death phenomena, nomophobia and political isolation. Curatorially, transpersonal contains an awareness above the usual remits of individuality brought on by the experience of a social crisis related to spiritual, ethical and relational extremes of art and contemporary life. Transpersonal, instructions is an evolving transnational research project that engages with public lectures, exhibition making, education, sonic scores and publishing in contemporary art. The exhibition arises from a series of public lectures at the ICA in London on the production of psychotechnologies, cyber addictions, material feminisms, citizenship and bioinsecurity.Transpersonal, instructions encourage a binding thread that resists and resets a world view on uneasiness. It is partly proposing a challenge to the current world order by providing a window into anthropological entanglements, for example those affecting indigenous lives. |
