In 2003 Lardinois and Williams were commissioned by Magnum to research a retrospective of the work of photographer Ian Berry. The research involved analysis of Ian Berry’s works in Magnum’s own archive and in the photographer’s holdings together with the locating and study of works in a number of external collections.

The three-venue exhibition was developed to present different emphases. In the North, (Lowry Centre, 2007) Berry’s photographs captured in the North of England in the 70s put in the context of specially chosen Lowry paintings informed the first venue exhibition. The theme of water and related issues, were shown in the water-side Lowry Centre. In the Guardian Newsroom, which houses the Guardian and Observer archives and visitors centre, Berry’s work in the Observer Magazine was showcased. A public symposium held at the Guardian Newsroom, London (8 May 2007) included Michael Rand and Julian Stallabrass as speakers with an accompanying publication with text by Lardinois amd Williams and surveying Berry’s career, changing styles and also the shifting markets and audiences.
