Description: | My work 'Beauties and Beasts' (Antonopoulou, 2007) has been exhibited at the TATE MODERN as part of the 'Telling Tales: Myths, Masks and Other Media' public event. The book exhibited is a large-format Victorian style wooden book that explores the connection between fact and fiction by reconstructing and remixing 'factual' newspaper stories with fictional Beauties and Beasts tales. The book offers the reader the opportunity to create different stories by mixing the two worlds; those of fiction and reality. As part of this, the book focuses on ‘Beauty and Beast’ themed fairy-tales exploring how the textual and visual representations of beauty change over time under the influences of technology, science and culture. The project dealt with the trans-media visualisations of fairy-tales (illustrations, animations, performances), explored philosophical discourses on reality and subjectivity and investigated the sociopolitical extensions of fairy-tales. The work has been exhibited before in several galleries including, the Victoria and Albert museum and the Whitechapel Gallery. I also led the TATE's four-week public learning event titled 'Telling Tales: Myths, Masks and Other Media' that was linked to Joan Jonas’s exhibition taking place at the TATE MODERN. As part of this Jonas' pioneering work across a range of media was used as a catalyst to explore different aspects of storytelling – from popular fairy tales to multi-screen film installations and draw parallels with the work of other artists and thinkers - including my own. The main topics explored were: Myths and Fairy Tales The learning aspect of the event explored how everyone can establish their own personal creative approach to storytelling, which is a big part of my own research. |
