a different path

This installation was made for "The Undersides of Practice" Group Exhibition.

A section of the plan of the Velvet and Silk Café designed by Lilly Reich and Mies van der Rohe (Women's Fashion exhibition, Berlin 1927) was configured to form an architectural transition between gallery 2 and 3 at APT. Flats of light fabric hung on thin aluminium bars suspended on nylon wire, formed walls, not inert, fixed or solid, but that swayed and rippled in response to the movement of air currents and moving bodies. The different density, colour and structure of the fabric ‘walls’ withheld perspectives whilst opening new shifting perspectives of the wider exhibition.

This installation is part of a body of work that responds to seminal works of architecture in which women have played a significant role. This working process opens up a curious intimacy with the buildings and their designers. It is at once a process of finding or embodying another, whilst recognising their unknowability. I am interested in how this familiarity and uncertainty can be used to reconfigure inherent questions of authorship, agency, gender and history.
