Description: | Chapter 2 is a photographic essay entitled ‘Interstitial Images’, by Louisa Minkin and Ian Dawson. The images presented in this essay offer a picture of Louisa and Ian’s developing engagement with digital technologies in their practices. Each written chapter in the volume is itself an interwoven assemblage incorporating a collection of digital images and digitally imaged artefacts as events. This chapter seeks to highlight the importance of a performative, non-representational, and relational approach not only to the making of knowledge but also to the making of the subjects of knowledge (Timeto 2015, 14). Dawson and Minkin have assembled their essay by bundling images together, often from the peripheral moments of an activity, capturing the surfaces and spaces of institutional archive areas or the other side of a midden pile on an archaeological dig. These are also interlaced with images of the mobile equipment required for field trips, including the scanning targets, tripods, and black balls; objects that would normally be edited out from object representations. Minkin and Dawson also make visible the different arrays of file types that occur through the process of digital imaging, presenting bitmap and UV files that would ordinarily remain hidden inside imaging software files. This collection of images is placed to intervene in the space in between, in order to contribute to new forms of debates about a-whereness (Thrift 2008, 166). |
