Description: | Progression (walking) and Progression (freestyle) form part of Anna Macdonald's ongoing research into the relationship of the body, time and affect. These moving image works involve an entire primary school walking through a free-standing doorway, organised from the youngest to the oldest. In one version, the children are asked to walk and in the other, they are invited to move in any way they want. Both iterations are filmed using a 24-minute single take which emphasises the indeterminate and responsive quality of the children’s movement as they make choices about how to respond to what has happened before them. They have been exhibited individually as single screen works at screendance and experimental film festivals and installed as a diptych within gallery settings. The work foregrounds the relationship between movement, time and progression enriching the field of movement and stillness studies. |
