Description: | Luca Tommasi is pleased to announce the exhibition "The Science of Painting" a conceptual and pictorial dialogue that brings together the works of the English artist Daniel Sturgis and the American artist Dan Walsh, with a text by the American critic Barry Schwabsky. Science by definition is "the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.” Each artist has specially developed for the exhibition a group of 10 new works in acrylic on Fabriano paper. Each painting is the same size (75x75cm). In this project both artists have responded practically and conceptually to various political, ideological or artistic positions: Classicism, Romanticism, Existentialism, Anthropomorphism , Futurism, Socialism, Utilitarianism, Postmodernism, Realism and Humanism. Through their systematic and structural responses to these “isms”, the artists reveal their individual thinking when manipulating form and reflecting on the visual and material history of each position. The resulting works should not be seen as illustrating respective positions, but rather they act as starting points or prompts for each artist’s work. The Science of Painting reflects on how discourse is or is not held in abstract paintings. |
