Description: | Baseman was selected for an Alchemy Fellowship, a research programme for artists at The Manchester Museum, the University of Manchester through a competitive process by the Director of Exhibitions (Geoff Horsely), the Alchemy Curator (Bryony Bond) and the artist Mark Dion. Baseman’s proposal for this research fellowship included the production of a series of films for exhibition within the museum throughout 2007/2008. This body of research addresses how material held within the Herbarium and Botany departments of the museum, the Visual Anthropology department at the University of Manchester and the North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University, can be investigated and used to create new narratives through the combination of scientific fact, academic research, anecdotal experience, hearsay and invented narrative. Using the archives, artefacts and specimens, and drawing upon Museum and University expertise, Baseman has to date created four films: 'Joy on Toast' (12 mins), 'The Documentary Imperative' (21 mins), 'Inside Man' (nine mins), and 'An Event in the Village' (nine mins). These works will be screened in the Herbarium at the Museum over a two-week period beginning 14th November 2007. Two further films will be screened at Matt’s Gallery, London (April 2008) and the Plaza Cinema in Manchester (January 2008). |
