Solo Exhibition - Use of Games

Marce, Marta (2001) Solo Exhibition - Use of Games. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Marce, Marta
Description:

The ‘Use of Games’ was an extensive project that produced a series of 14 paintings and 100 lithographs that investigated how games could be used in the production of paintings, and deployed strategies of disruption and accident to develop new pictorial forms and imagery. Marce works with the systems and rules of games, and the structure that these rules provide as starting points for these paintings. The rules of the game provide instructions and outline her strategies in the making of the paintings, with elements of chance within this formal arena breaking the limitations of the formulae.

Fourteen paintings were shown at the Milton Keynes Gallery alongside a show of Sigmar Polke from 31st March - 20th May 2001. Additionally, work from this series was shortlisted for the Jerwood Painting Prize 2001, and simultaneously exhibited (5th May - 17th June 2001) in the Jerwood Space, London; this exhibition then toured to the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (6th July - 21st October 2001). The shortlist comprised six painters - Peter Archer, Basil Beattie, Ian Davenport, Marce, Katie Pratt, Tim Renshaw; the exhibition received extensive press coverage and was accompanied by a catalogue with text by Norbert Lynton. Marce took part in a panel event with Sacha Craddock and Stephen Snoddy at the Milton Keynes Gallery. A special edition of lithographs was produced to accompany the Milton Keynes exhibition. Paintings from this series were acquired by collections that included the British Airways Art Collection and The Government Art Collection.
