Iberê Camargo: o carretel – meu personagem

Asbury, Michael (2013) Iberê Camargo: o carretel – meu personagem. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Asbury, Michael
Description:

This exhibition traces the unfolding of the reel in the artist's work, from its origins in the traditional genre of still life, to its metamorphosis that leads to the exercise of painting as an autonomous form. Further on, by receiving anthropomorphic attributes and through the procedure of form repetition, it becomes almost a signature, a symbol of the artist's own being. As Iberê Camargo stated:

“Symbol, sign, character – the spool –, a toy from my childhood and now, at this stage, the theme of my work, it is impregnated with the contents of my world.”

Undoubtedly, the most recurrent theme in his work, consensually recognized as a mark of the artist's maturity, the spool, according to Iberê Camargo himself, brings to the surface the deepest memories of his childhood. Its significance stems from its power to span the distance between innocence and maturity, figuration and abstraction, its symbolic function and formal autonomy.

If, however, the reel in the painting, with its sober tones and its thick layers of pictorial mass, seems to affirm the idea of the solitary expressionist artist, burdened with the pain of life, melancholy about the irreversible loss of innocence, in the engraving, it is the appearance of lightness is frequent in the form that is emphasized through playful, playful compositions. By presenting such a juxtaposition, this exhibition invites us to reinterpret the meaning of the theme of the spool in the work of Iberê Camargo, aiming at an approximation between the clashes of the time and certain contemporary artistic procedures.
