Trailer: Performance Addressing how Movement and Drawing can be Integrated into Theatrical Space

This research is the result of Blunck’s long-standing interest in the exploration of drawing in a performance context. In 2004 Blunck devised an untitled performance in collaboration with British director Yael Shavit. Drawing and animated sequences were used in three-dimensional space to create a narrative.

The findings from this research were used in collaboration with dancer-choreographer Camille Litalien to create ‘Trailer’. As designer, animator and co-deviser of this work Blunck investigated the integration of drawing and animation and the potential for projection as an interactive medium. The stage was replaced by the framework of a trailer, within which live-drawing, animation and mime combined to form a performance. The integration of dance, drawing and animation into the live performance was achieved through the application of technology and sound design, resulting in a form of three-dimensional animation, integrated with dance and mime. The process of drawing and the creation of space was made visible, thus turning the performance space into a ‘performative space’ which in turn became a substitute for, or created a dialogue with, a ‘live’ performer.

‘Trailer' was shown in development at Battersea Arts Centre, London, in September 2005 and was a finalist in the Oxford Samuel Beckett Award 2005. The final performance premiered at the ‘International Mime Festival’ (Mimos) in Périgueux, France 2006 where it was awarded the New Discovery Prize. In October 2006, as part of the Tonic Season ‘Trailer’ was shown at the Camden People’s Theatre supported by the Arts Council England.

Marie Blunck designs explorative performances using new technologies. She has devised interactive installations and designed numerous plays and various short films with directors Yael Shavit and Zeb Lamb.

She has been collaborating with Slung Low on Small Worlds for the Liverpool City of Culture Festival 2008 and Helium, which won the 2008 Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award and was premiered at The Barbican Centre's Pit Theatre in London in September 2008.

In 2005 Blunck and her collaborators founded the experimental theatre company 'Indian Runner Production', which is dedicated to the production of physically innovative work. Their mission is to create a language that captures a true integration of movement with other theatrical mediums, seeking to create theatrical performances that explore and extend spatial possibilities.
