With Feet Firmly Planted on Unstable Ground

This chapter considers the tectonics of the interior, focusing on the physical experience of the floor plane (the floor) in comparison to the physical experience of the public ground plane (the earth). It develops a cultural understanding of the distinctions between these two types of ground as a means of understanding the significance of the interior in terms of the types of ground that are stepped upon, proposing that the interior is defined through a disconnect, whereas public space is shaped through an idea of earth as collective historical memory.
