Description: | Verdant is a group exhibition of arts researchers and post-graduates from Middlesex University curated by Camilla Brown. In the three works I contributed I was interested in the way certain forms and events disturb our commonplace view of landscape as something picturesque or pastoral. In this case looking at disturbance events such as, landslides, floods or extreme weather; and natural formations such as suggestive tree and rock outcrops which serve as visual referents for deep time, or geological time (evidence of abyssal eons). I have been influenced here by the notion of pareidolia a seemingly inert characteristic of people to see faces or anthropomorphised forms in otherwise inanimate phenomena, and the work of artists such as Paul Nash, in particular his photographs for Monster Field (1938). |
