Knowledge with Voice and Hands: tending to the invisible

Voegelin, Salomé (2021) Knowledge with Voice and Hands: tending to the invisible. In: Sound Practice and Research series, 29 June 2022, Goldsmiths, University of London, Online.

Type of Research: Conference, Symposium or Workshop Item
Creators: Voegelin, Salomé
Description:

"the small breath drawn before speaking, sounds the moulding of air for words. Try to use this air, this exhalation and expiration, to sing and speak with a different voice, and tend to this voice in listening with hands ready to continue its song."

This talk hopes to explore listening as a mode of tending to and a practice of being with through which we could think knowledge as a knowing-with that does not produce evidence, as objective fact and reference, but that performs the subjective truth of participation and the autobiographical body.

Salomé Voegelin will consider listening and sounding in its diffuse and relational materialisation as a way to imagine the legitimacy of a knowledge that is not factual but felt; that is a knowing of practice and of participation, on the body from the body, where theory and practice collapse into the contingency of doing through which we know in the plural, and inclusive of science’s exclusions – its noise, its non-objective, unintelligible and unrecognisable forms - and come to generate an understanding that is mobile and contingent; that involves the knower in their cultural milieu and practice, from how they do things rather than how things are done.
