A series of 12 unique collages

Around Here is a limited edition series of twelve collage works, which sits in relation to an earlier work of Horvat’s titled To See Stars over Mountains. This larger series, comprising 365 collages produced throughout 2021, emerged from the artist’s daily practice of walking-related image making. Every day for the duration of 2021, Horvat has taken a photograph while out walking, which she prints out and alters in different ways – through drawing, collaging, cutting, tearing, folding, etc. – to imagine alternative possibilities for the locations she walks through.

Around Here mirrors the logic of To See Stars over Mountains, but deploys it within a different temporal frame. While the larger series was produced one per day over the course of an entire year, the images that make up Around Here were taken on a single day, during an hour-long walk in Horvat’s North London neighbourhood.

In Around Here, the interventions the artist has enacted upon the twelve photographs centre on a singular gesture of tearing the photographic print by hand, whereby the rough torn edge appears as a continuation of certain lines and shapes found in the photograph. Via the tear, the trace of action and the materiality of paper both become part of a transformed image, a captured photographic moment which is expanded to create new visual and imaginative possibilities.

The series was produced in conjunction with Horvat’s solo show By Hand, on Foot at PEER London, on view 3 February – 2 April 2022 and has been donated to PEER in support of the organisation’s programmes.

Each original work from the series is accompanied by a limited edition hand-stitched artist book documenting the entire series.
