What Is on the Ground and What Is in the Sky

What Is on the Ground and What Is in the Sky is a site-responsive sculptural installation made for the front gallery space at PEER London, responding to the idiosyncrasies of the architectural space it occupies and the particular details found in the street onto which the room looks out. Constructed using simple found and commonplace materials, the work pushes and probes at the edges of the built environment encompassing it, challenging its confines while referencing its surroundings using gestures of mirroring and copying.

The work continues a strand of Horvat’s work in sculptural installation which regularly reconsiders limits and boundaries between spaces. By creating physical barriers or intrusions into the architecture, the installation addresses the possibilities and problems of inhabiting and negotiating space, exploring the effects that spatial re-organisation has on social structures, systems of exchange, and encounters with people and place.

Part of the installation reworks Horvat’s earlier work, Reinforcements, exhibited at Bard Center for Curatorial Studies in Annandale-on-Hudson in upstate New York, USA in 2016, at CAPRI Kunstraum in Dusseldorf, Germany in 2016, and at Showroom, London in 2017.

What Is on the Ground and What Is in the Sky comprises one of three elements of Horvat’s solo exhibition at PEER London, titled By Hand, on Foot, on view 3 February – 2 April 2022.
