Kimathi Donkor: Notebooks

'Kimathi Donkor: Notebooks' was a solo exhibition of 14 drawings on paper and one painting on canvas at Brixton Tate Library in London. Most drawings depict a solitary black woman viewed in profile while concentrating on the screen of a mobile phone, laptop or tablet computer—although some feature small groups of 2 or 3 figures including men and children. All the drawings are characterised by a clear, fine graphite outline with watercolour and ink tonalities applied only to skin tones and hair. Each imaginary figure is portrayed in full, wearing contemporary dress and without cropping. Excepting chairs and stools for seated figures, there are no other forms within the frame, as most of the picture surface remains blank.
