Description: | Scenography by Kate Lane. Re-defining Juliet examined the character Juliet in Romeo & Juliet. Its aim was to challenge society's idea of who could & should play this character by selecting people who wouldn’t typically be cast in the role of Shakespeare’s iconic heroine, It was devised through the performers own experiences and society's expectations upon them. The design was deliberately not specific to a period but drew on the Baroque with a particular reference to Caravaggio - looking at the timeless' of the play and subsequent myth making of the character. Originally conceived by Storme Toolis in 2015 through the Barbican Open Lab programme, the creative process was filmed and broadcast on BBC Four. I joined as designer during the Research & Development of the stage production with the Royal Shakespeare Company which culminated in a reading at The Other Place as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Mischief Festival. The final version was shown at the Pit Theatre in the Barbican as part of the 2018 Art for Change Season. |
