Caring with, Voice and Under-Represented Expressions of Love in and through The Undefinable by She Goat: An Artist-Researcher's Perspective

In this chapter, Eugénie Pastor, with inputs from her long-term collaborator Shamira Turner, explores the ways in which their artistic collaboration as experimental performance duo She Goat, and their performance piece The Undefinable (2019), enact examples of a practice of what Bojana Kunst has defined as ‘caring with’. Placing a practice of caring with at the heart of their collaboration is a means of resisting the pressure for artists to be productive within precarious and violent structures, whilst enabling Pastor and Turner’s love, relationship and collaboration to survive. The author argues that this enacted in The Undefinable, a piece concerned with under-represented expressions of love, where, in the way Pastor and Turner use audio description and sung voice, ways of gently resisting dominant narratives regarding work, labour, art-making and relationships emerge.
