Aesthetic Violence in the Anarchival Turn: On the Infinite Visions of History

Looking at Rey (Niles Atallah, 2017), Spell Reel (Filipa César, 2017), as well as my own found footage film, I Think You Should Come to America (2017), this article focuses on the uses of archival material in contemporary experimental filmmaking. Using my recently coined term aesthetic violence, this article engages with Rob Nixon's concept of 'slow violence' as analysed here in relation to the oppression of the Mapuche tribes in Chile (Rey), colonisation of Guinea-Bissau by the Portuguese (Spell Reel) and the genocide of the Native American populations.
