Description: | A dispersed sculptural intervention inhabiting various locations at University College London (UCL) and a bespoke archive. Highlighting the absence of archival material relating to Slade alumna (1893-1897), Irish Revolutionary and Britain’s first female MP (1918) Countess Markievicz. Sentenced to death for her role in the 1916 Rising against British occupation of Ireland. Markievicz was released under a General Amnesty from the British. Taking its title from a description of unsanctioned letters Markievicz sent whilst imprisoned. The work consisted of casts of each book Markievicz appeared in the index of. The casts replaced the original books on the shelves and the original books formed an archive in the UCL Art museum. Following the initial installation of this site specific work the work has been donated by the Artist to UCL and will be on permanent display in the oldest part of UCL's main library the Donaldson Reading room later in 2023. |
