This review essay on the exhibition Flagging It Up, Zarina Bhimji, curated by Fiona Bradley, Fruitmarket, Edinburgh, 28 October 2023–28 January 2024, focuses on Bhimji's latest film Blind Spot (2023), but includes analysis of a number of earlier films: Out of Blue (2002) and Waiting (2007), as well as her classic photographic installation from 1987, She Loved to Breathe – Pure Silence. As well as referring to key past interviews given by Bhimji, it also explores Jean Laplanche's concept of ‘afterwardsness’ in relation to the materiality of how an artist might address trauma in their work.
