Virtual Reality and the Gallery

Virtual Reality and the Gallery: A sold-out one-day conference and exhibition at the Tate Gallery, London, 12th May 1995 was produced by the 'Virtual Reality as a Fine Art Medium' research group at Chelsea College of Art and Design, in association with the Tate Gallery. The event was supported by Division, Silicon Graphics and Superscape virtual reality companies

The Conference brought together international artists, theorists and educators to explore the possibilities of art and immersive virtual reality technology. Speakers included Roy Ascott, Dr Kevin Atherton, Matt Mullican, Professor Margaret Morse, Dr Helen Cadwallader and ' Galeria Virtual' (Roc and Narcis Pares).

The parallel exhibition demonstrated the creative work made by the research team at the Virtual Reality as a Fine Art Medium research group at Chelsea College of Art and Design, Kevin Atherton, Joanna Buick and Peter Maloney. It also showcased work created for Artaids, an artists’ Internet project celebrating and commemorating the fight against AIDS which had launched in November 1994.
