Description: | 'One of the most innovative and entertaining events in the annual art calendar' Celebrating creative and innovative work by more than 200 national and international artists, Video Positive '95 is the largest electronic arts festival in the UK. From 29 April – 6 May 1995, Liverpool's premiere arts venues host more than 50 events including exhibitions, performances, broadcasts, screenings and seminars. Additionally VP95 features 10 North West community and education projects as part of its progressive collaboration programme ranging from radio transmissions to installations and screenings. Virtua Sculpture was commissioned for the Toybox CD-ROM, presented at the Video Positive '95 Festival in Liverpool. The work was premiered at the Tate Gallery Liverpool on 28th April 1995. It was commissioned by Moviola with support from Arts Council of England (Visual Arts Publications), Liverpool John Moores University and Moviola. The work references the Virtua Fighting and Virtua Racing video games. It speculates on the coming together of Art, and Video Game culture through shared digital tools. 'Virtua Sculpture' consists of six virtual environments navigable in real-time from CD-ROM. Each of the forms are constructed using 3D clip-art collections of domestic furniture, street furniture, office furniture and industrial kitchenware. They are then either stacked to make totems or placed on a surface to create tableaux. Together they form sets of Future Relics - obsolete and untraceable through their encoding. |
