Bike Off 2 – catalysing anti-theft bike, bike parking and information design for the 21st century: an open innovation research approach

The chapter reviews the methodology developed and deployed within the Bike Off 2 project and notes the significance of this methodology in maximising research outputs and impact. The publication draws on research delivered within the Bike Off project to review best practice in relation to bike theft prevention. The guide was distributed to every US police force.

Design Against Crime as Socially Responsive Design (SRVD), using design to address social issues linked to products, public spaces and/or public services. 3D/industrial design, Graphic Design/Packaging, Co-Design/User-centred (interaction) design focussing on abusers and mis-users as well as sustainability issues. Fashion-Product Crossover design; Crime; designing products, places and systems against crime, disorder, drug abuse and terrorism; Gender, and representation; visual communication, consumer culture in the post-modern context.

Designing products, places and systems against crime, disorder, drug abuse and terrorism, situational crime prevention, conceptual frameworks for integrating crime science, managing crime prevention knowledge and improving practice, evaluation methods, crime, evolution, complexity and design, crime futures. Theory, development, implementation & evaluation of Design Against Crime, definitions & conceptual frameworks for knowledge transfer of good practice in crime prevention, horizon scanning, incl. crime risk/ impact assessment, evolution, arms races, complexity & simulation applied to crime.
