Antarctica - Hangar Bicocca

The core themes of the body of work Antarctica refer to issues of freer international migration, displacement, habitat, environment, survival and cooperation. Drawing from the idealogical premise of the 1959 Antarctica Treaty, Anatrctica embodies the hope for a neutral peaceful land, free of conflict and dedicated to common goals for research. To visualise these themes Lucy Orta and her partner Jorge have created a multi-facted series of artworks (installation, sculpture, video, photography, drawing, public engagement artworks, digital platform, etc), that have been the focus of large scale installations that attract tens of thousands of visitors.

The Antarctica exhibition at the Hangar Bicocca, curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, represented the first complete public showing of the artworks created by the artists as a result of their expedition in Antarctica in 2007. The exhibition was also an occasion for presenting other major works created over the previous five years, addressing social, environmental and humanitarian issues: mobility, population migration, climate and environmental crises, and human rights.
