Apparatus 00:37:94

‘Apparatus 00:37:94’ is a kinetic sculptural assemblage produced collaboratively with the artist Kristaps Ancāns, and is part of an evolving constellation of artefacts, events and exhibitions grouped under the title ‘Metahorror’. These interrelated elements explore possibilities for generating meta-commentary within visual practice, through experimentation with the self-reflexive conventions deployed in specific forms of genre fiction.

By extending approaches associated with post-modern literature to contemporary art practice, the project aims at fostering new narrative modes in experimental moving image, performance and multimedia installation. In the process it pulls into focus a broader ongoing enquiry into genre fiction and relationships between art, entertainment and esoteric thought.

Installed as a physical counterpoint to video works produced for an earlier iteration of the project, the sculpture – which comprises a stylised symbolic manikin-object that is crudely animated by an exposed mechanical apparatus – performatively dramatises a dimension of this enquiry.
