Description: | Imaan is a queer Muslim support group in the UK. On 2 July 2005 at Pride London, Imaan co-founder Faizan Fiaz gave a speech on the stage at Trafalgar Square about being Queer and Muslim, while dressed traditionally. The response to the speech was mixed, in favour and against, with many cheering, and some booing the speaker. The speech was not recorded in any medium. As I had been at the event marching in support of Imaan's work, I was asked in my role as Sound Artist, to recreate the speech in spirit and feel. I proposed a piece that would reference similar recreated speeches by Winston Churchill after World War 2, in which historic speeches were crafted and reimagined. Imaan Audio in the permanent collection at Queer Britain, the UK's first permanent Queer Art Collection. Imaan 2005 Audio, is testiment to a different time. |
