Description: | Design Transforms Borders invited participants to join live studios of ceramic making, dinners and debates promoting access, learning and social justice with the communities of Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NYC. The studio explored borders and their meanings: relationships informed by them, the physical, the geographic and emotional significance of borders, identities formed, and journeys made. They were led by the Product Ceramic and Industrial Design programme at CSM with human rights activist organisations Touching Land and Territorial Empathy, the studio engaged 662 people through workshops to co-produce an installation alongside expert speakers’ panels over four days and discursive dinners in Industry City's Design Week. Objectives The workshops were aimed at extended communities of Sunset Park, where the venue, Industry City – a regeneration site, is located. This area is notable for multiple deprivations and challenges of inequality. The key objective of our 2022 intervention was to deepen the 2019 participant experience, bringing a broad community into debate through making. We coproduced Design Transforms Borders workshops, installation building and other events with not-for-profit organisations Touching Land and Territorial Empathy. We were bringing together a broad manifestation within the New York x Design festival to highlight and deepen socially engaged practice, interact further with communities around Industry City, and showcase PCID’s HEI leadership in socially engaged design practices. |
