Description: | 'The Death of Clinton McCurbin' is a 2022 painting by Kimathi Donkor which was first exhibited in 2023 at the Sharjah Museum of Art for the 15th Sharjah Biennial, 'Thinking Historically in the Present'. The work's title is a reference to Clinton Ludlow McCurbin, a 24-year old British man of Jamaican heritage who died during his arrest by Wolverhampton police in 1987 on suspicion of a petty retail offence. Although Home Office and family pathologists testified that the immediate cause of death was 'asphyxia as a result of compression of the neck' (1990, EWCA Civ J0312-8), the 1988 inquest ruling was 'misadventure' (ibid). |
