Description: | A narrative was woven around surviving material dating from the 16th century to modern day ephemera. Imagery and evidence were drawn from international museum collections, archives, oral testimony, personal souvenirs and newly made artefacts. The exhibition comprises a 3 metre long cabinet (inspired by 16th century cabinets of curiosity) containing a three-dimensional, thematic, timeline, which was photographed to form the book, which in turn documented the exhibition (reversing the usual format and in so doing reinforcing Carnaby Street’s association with alternative possibilities). Original 1960s clothing, film footage and photographs by Philip Townsend were juxtaposed with especially commissioned images from documentary photographer Syd Shelton and illustrator Alice Smith. |
