| Description: | 'Portraiture as Politics: Afro-Lisboans' was a paper presented to the 'Portraiture as Politics' workshop of the 1-54 FORUM at Somerset House on 4th October, 2018. That edition of 1-54 FORUM, titled 'Freefall' was the four-day talks programme of the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair. The ticketed event featured three speakers, Irvin Pascal, Kudzanai-Violet Hwami and myself, chaired by David A. Bailey MBE with an introduction by Ekow Eshun, curator of 1-54 FORUM. My talk centred on a 2013 project in which I painted portraits of two Afro-Lisboans during the 'Offline' residency in Lisbon, Portugal. I considered how questions about how handicrafts, technology and identity intersect with the political economy of contemporary art practice.
