Description: | The installation 'Kept Within the Bounds' was exhibited in the Painting Gallery of the Foundling Museum in October 2016. It was part of an exhibition 'Finding Foundlings' which took place to conclude Taylor's artist residency at the museum and was part of an AHRC-funded PhD practice-based research project, titled 'Heritage as Process: Constructing the Historical Child's Voice Through Art Practice'. During the residency, Taylor ran workshop sessions, and employed methods from performance practice to encourage participating children to construct a foundling ‘character’. After role-play, the children painted their 'imagined' foundling. The children’s paintings were integrated into the installation 'Kept Within the Bounds', which included sound, and mirrored the floorplan of the Foundling Hospital. Taylor purposefully positioned the work in the Painting Gallery, below the portraits of the hospital donors, to draw attention to the men who have been remembered and the children who had been 'forgotten'. 'Kept Within The Bounds' is featured in the books: 'Illustration and Heritage' by Rachel Emily Taylor (2024) and 'Illustration Research Methods' by Rachel Gannon and Marielle Fauchon (2021). |
