Animation and Calligraphy Workshop: The Two Goats and the Wolf – Хоёр ямаа ба чоно

The Two Goats and the Wolf – Cleverness over Strength is a short cut-out animation created by children from the Solongo Center during a two-hour workshop at the Erdenesiin Khuree Mongolian Calligraphy and Art Center, Kharkhorin, on 13 August 2025. Led by artist-in-residence Kim Noce, with support from calligrapher U. Tseveendulam, the workshop invited children to reimagine a traditional Mongolian tale through paper, colour, and movement.

The film captures their creativity and joy as bridges, rivers, goats, and a wolf appear frame by frame. Beyond the animated story, it reflects the spirit of shared storytelling — linking cultural heritage with contemporary animation, and giving young participants an opportunity to learn, play, and create together. The narration is spoken by the children in Mongolian, with captions in both Mongolian and English.

This film forms part of the residency Tracing Motion: Animation and Mongolian Calligraphy and sits alongside the collaborative exhibition Light of the Heart’s Home.

This workshop was part of my residency Tracing Motion: Animation and Mongolian Calligraphy, where I explored the relationship between calligraphic gestures, animation, and ecological storytelling. By inviting children to animate a traditional tale, the workshop created a bridge between cultural heritage and contemporary animation, echoing my broader research into Animated Environmental Rituals.

The residency culminated in Light of the Heart’s Home, a collaborative exhibition with U. Tseveendulam at the Erdenesiin Khuree Mongolian Calligraphy and Art Center in Kharkhorin. The exhibition transformed the Artist Ger/Yurt into a five-senses environment of animation, drawings, calligraphy, clothing, objects, incense, and projections. A series of short films — including the exhibition film, behind-the-scenes, and a 360° walk-through — document and extend the experience.

Statement

The Two Goats and the Wolf – Хоёр ямаа ба чоно was created during the residency Tracing Motion: Animation and Mongolian Calligraphy at the Erdenesiin Khuree Mongolian Calligraphy and Art Center, Kharkhorin, Mongolia (August 2025). The residency set out to explore how animation can engage with Mongolian calligraphy to examine movement, storytelling, and cultural memory, situating animation within ritual-based environmental storytelling and sustainable creative practice
.

The workshop on 13 August 2025 was developed in collaboration with the Solongo Center, a children’s home in Kharkhorin. For two hours, children aged 6–14 took part in a cut-out animation process designed to be accessible, playful, and collaborative. The chosen tale — The Two Goats and the Wolf — was selected for its moral of cleverness over strength, its clear narrative arc, and its suitability for group animation.

Planning materials divided the tale into three parts: the goats meeting the wolf on a bridge, their whispered plan, and their joint action that sends the wolf into the river
. Children worked in groups to draw and cut out backgrounds and characters, then animated them step by step using stop-motion. The story is narrated in Mongolian by the children, with captions in both Mongolian and English, ensuring accessibility across audiences.

The process foregrounded the children’s creativity and enjoyment, as goats, bridges, rivers, and wolves came alive frame by frame. More than producing a short film, the workshop reflected the residency’s intent: to position animation as an embodied practice of storytelling and to open up collective spaces for cultural dialogue, imagination, and reflection.

The workshop sits alongside the exhibition Light of the Heart’s Home (with U. Tseveendulam), which transformed an Artist Ger/Yurt into a multi-sensory environment of calligraphy, animation, drawings, objects, incense, and projections. Together, the exhibition and workshop extend the methodology of Animated Environmental Rituals — situating animation as both process and encounter, where art-making fosters cultural sustainability, ecological awareness, and shared reflection.

Both artists provided statements that framed their intentions: U. Tseveendulam’s calligraphy practice emphasised resilience, heritage, and identity, while Kim Noce’s research sought to capture the “calligraphy of nature” and to create spaces of pause and dialogue

. The workshop embodied these intentions in practice by inviting children to engage directly with storytelling, connecting cultural heritage with contemporary animation.
