Photography as evidence. Use of photography in Holocaust trials and photography’s role as evidence today

This paper considers photographic and infographic images made by and for the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg 1945-1946. The trial inaugurated significant new regimes of seeing, allied to, yet complicating, notions of juridical truth in ways that would prevail for decades. The photographic image opens up spaces between disciplines, between historical periods, and between imagination and reality. It is evidentiary and performative at once, and it is this dialectical role that has been neglected, offering such expansive possibilities for the story of international criminal law and for documentary photography.
